Global warming is assuming alarming proportions and has become a cause for international concern. Over the past century the average global temperature has risen by more than one degree Fahrenheit.  From droughts to wide spread rain and floods, the world is witnessing cataclysmic climate change affecting the lives of all its inhabitants.

In order to slow down this process, nations around the world are gearing up to adopt green initiatives and ensure that all past and future man-made projects are in harmony with nature. One of the primary identified causes of global warming is the increase in new construction around the globe, which results in a massive demand for electricity, requiring extensive burning of fossil fuel to keep up with the demand.

Many efforts are being made to cut down the rate of global warming. One such effort is by The Claridges Hotels & Resorts, which is building a new 5 star deluxe hotel on lines specified towards the green initiative.

Due to high level of pollution there is an urgency to reduce the green-house gas emissions and other environmental degradation that has grown over the last decade. It has been identified that buildings alone are responsible for 25-40% of energy consumption, 30-40% of material resource consumption, 30-40% of waste production and 30-40% green -house gas emissions globally. Additionally, estimates also reveal that about 30% of newly built or renovated buildings suffer from “Sick Building Syndrome”, exposing occupants to unhealthy environmental conditions. Today, there is a continuous effort to monitor, control and reduce the pollution. One alternative is a ‘green building’.

A green building leads to:

• Reduction in the operating cost by increasing productivity, using less energy, water and other resources
• Improvement in guests’ and employees’ health, due to improved indoor air quality
• Reduction in the waste and environmental impact, by using the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) and lessening the storm-water run-offs.

The Claridges, Surajkund, Delhi, NCR is one step ahead in achieving all these parameters by using:

• Floor insulation to keep desired U and R values
• Energy efficient windows using lead-free PVC windows frame from ALUPLAST
• Window glass with low U values (2.7), this leading to a certified 30% energy saving.

The other features installed in the building are:

• High efficiency HVAC Equipments – Chiller with high COP, variable frequency drives, treated fresh air units, motorised valves and thermostat, natural and mechanised ventilation and pressurisation, CO2 censor for car parking ventilation area and BTU meters
• Efficient use of water and water recycling – zero water discharge, use of recycled water, dual flushing in guest rooms, use of pool cover during heating, high efficiency irrigation system and rain water harvesting
• Use of renewable energy – solar water heating
• Effective controls and building management system – web-based IBMS & CCTV, access control, digital video monitoring and automatic fire suppression
• Networking and interactive TV – Wi-fi, wired and internet on TV, digital signage, mobile signal booster, interactive TV and video and audio on demand
• Energy efficient electrical system – dual power feeds, automatic power correction and power management, efficient lighting with dimmers, LED’s & CFL’s, energy efficient laundry and kitchen equipments, energy efficient elevators with supervisory panels.
