Infrastructure and transport in Commonwealth states must adapt to twenty-first century concerns, which include, but are not limited to, developing sustainable communities, increasing linkages and therefore improving accessibility, managing urban sprawl and encouraging mixed-use developments. Yet, perhaps more urgently than these requirements, there are still many communities that lack the basic infrastructure to provide utilities and essential services. To tackle a growing population, and finance sustainable living complete with supporting infrastructure, municipal infrastructure financing has been re-examined, and joint-venture schemes and public private partnerships (PPPs) have become more attractive options. This section considers all these changing demands and solutions, and focuses on the connectivity of places, particularly through public transport, as a crucial means of linking up cities, reducing car use and improving access to essential services. Articles here also focus on the construction prospects for Commonwealth states in the coming years, and discuss the role of infrastructure in post-crisis and post-disaster recovery.
