Key Issues

Education & Training

Universities within the Commonwealth can contribute to local industries, encourage the economic growth and social development of a nation and, on an international scale, form important partnerships. Yet as universities, and even virtual universities, continue to develop, the Millennium Development Goal to create universal primary education is not close to being met by 2015. Even when this is met, many secondary schools are still not able to offer quality education for all. In each of the stages of education, one of the key difficulties is finding ways to obtain, train and retain quality teachers. This section looks at these issues, and places huge emphasis on increasing the inclusivity of education, so that education may offer equal opportunities to all races, genders, abilities and backgrounds. Some articles also touch upon some contentious issues surrounding learning within the Commonwealth, such as ‘brain drain’.
