Gender equality is a fundamental principle of the Commonwealth. Sport, however, often described as a male domain, remains a site of gender inequalities, particularly for girls and women, with vast differences in progress across Commonwealth countries. Promoting gender equality in and through sport can provide personal and social development through recognising the power of women and sport; acknowledging the challenges faced by girls and women in a predominantly male sport domain; adopting a human rights approach while sensitising action to local needs; and moving forward in promoting gender equality in government action and policy.
