The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation which acts as an advisor to its member countries in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens. One of its core duties is to analyse the current situation in global energy markets and provide an outlook on how these markets may evolve in the years ahead. In this article Dr Fatih Birol, Chief Economist and Director of the Office of the Chief Economist at the IEA, discusses the need for a transformation of the global energy system to effectively manage the transition to a more sustainable energy future. He argues that in order to overcome the pressing global economic and energy challenges we face, it is necessary for business and government to work together.
