Commonwealth fast facts

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent countries.

The combined population of the Commonwealth is 2.2 billion.

The combined gross domestic product of Commonwealth member countries is predicted to reach US$14 trillion by 2020.

Intra-Commonwealth trade in goods and services is estimated at more than $680 billion and projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2020.

Commonwealth members’ combined exports of goods and services are valued at $3.4 trillion, which is about 15 per cent of the world’s total exports.

60% of the Commonwealth’s citizens are under the age of 30.

The most innovative economies in Sub-Saharan Africa are Commonwealth member countries (8 out of the top 10).

25 Commonwealth countries have high or very high human development according to the HDI.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 8 of the top 10 countries with the lowest levels of corruption are Commonwealth members.

Half of the top 20 global emerging cities are in the Commonwealth.

The report was launched on Commonwealth Day 2017 at the Commonwealth Day Observance in Westminster Abbey attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Heads of Government, High Commissioners, and numerous other VIPs. Produced in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, the report aims to help foster sustainable economic, social and environmental development across the Commonwealth. The 2017 report features an impressive array of authoritative views on topics ranging from the Sustainable Development Goals and peace-building to trade and infrastructure development.

On the eve of CHOGM 2015 that took place in Malta, 27-29 November, Henley Media Group and the Royal Commonwealth Society launched the CHOGM 2015 Report. This 242 page, hard-back book addressed the major themes of the modern Commonwealth.
